Welcome to the University of Michigan family!

Families play a vital role in the lives of U-M students. In fact, many students still count on their families to remain a steady and stable source of support and guidance. Family members can serve as mentors, offering advice and encouragement, while also promoting independence, autonomy, and responsibility.

The Office of New Student Programs has designed this Parent & Family Orientation course to answer your questions as you send your young adult to the University of Michigan. We hope that you find the information informative and that it answers the many questions you may have.

Course Overview

This course includes information about supporting your student during their transition to the university. It also includes information about general academic resources, living in Ann Arbor, resources to support students' physical and mental health, safety on campus, student life, and more. Information about specific school and colleges, including academic and degree requirements, will be provided to you directly by your student's academic school/college. Watch for emails from your student's school/college this summer.
